“Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again!”

Hope I have your attention and you’re sitting comfortably…

Today I am writing about the story behind the Love Lounger, from one couple’s journey into the swinging lifestyle to the inspiration that started it all.

Hi, I’m “Little George,” the male half of a recently married couple, “the Georges.” We’ve been together over 20 years and in the Lifestyle 20 years. On our first date in the early 2000’s I met a crazy lady Nancy, the love of my life and now my wife! Mrs George introduced me to the Lifestyle, we were in my hot tub in our bathing suits because that’s what fine upstanding citizens did when she suggested we take them off. I was horrified, mortified… who was this captivating vixen, age Devi in human form, WITCH! Then came the hammer blow that hit me right between the eyes, a simple ultimatum “are you in or are you out?” After what seemed like an eternity of mixed emotions, inner turmoil, anxiety and heart palpitations, which was in fact mere seconds… I said yes a thousand times YES! So here we are.

Love Lounger

Now it’s time to interject a short history lesson, I’ll be doing this from time to time in my column here educating the masses! As mentioned previously, I used to be a fine upstanding young man. So not wanting to break the law and incur fines or possible jail time, we tied the knot last September 27. What inspired this was a chance conversation with an old friend who told me, a little-known law on the books from the mid-1800s, when Canada was still a British colony, about common law relationships. I’ve paraphrased it so it’s easier to understand without all the usual old world legalize: “common law relationships cannot legally continue past a maximum of 20 years without the union of marriage undertaken.” Obviously it’s faded into the annals of history, but, well… you just never know!

But I digress. Where’s the FFFun? And, what about the furniture?

I came to Canada in the early ’80s courtesy of the British Royal Engineers, met and married my first wife. After a brief stint working in a fruit market, I got into wood crafting full-time. Custom-built stairs, cabinet making, custom furniture work for a small business in Milton, but not my own company yet. During 27 years with CN Rail, I dabbled with woodworking, making furniture for my own family and friends.

I was introduced to “sex furniture” whilst visiting lifestyle friends for a summer BBQ, where they proudly showed off their new piece of furniture: a “sex chair!” Looking at all the positions, fun and trouble you can get into and onto on this unique piece, of course we had to try out a few of them… and then we did again and again! It was quite well made but lightweight, had a tendency to slide, and I could tell durability would be an issue. It wasn’t cheap and I’m sure the price reflected the fact that it was being promoted as a sex chair!

The Love Lounger

On the way home from our friends, Ms. George said, “You have to build us one of those.” So I did, but with solid 3/4 plywood throughout, all joints glued, screwed and nailed. Our Loungers have rubber feet to prevent that annoying ability for the other lightweight models to slide on wooden or vinyl floors. I always use marine-grade vinyl — you don’t want bodily fluids all over your leather lounger! These can be upholstered in a rainbow of colours, but most people prefer black because it goes with any decor.

I’ve seen similar Loungers online that are wider than the 16” width we use. Also people have asked about having a double Lounger made, but, here’s the problem: do you want to try and use the Lounger bow legged? Imagine trying to straddle your partner on a wider Lounger and still be comfortable! If you require a little more height for longer legs a cushion or pillow will help make up the difference.

Wait a minute! “We’d love to have one, but what about when family and friends visit?” No problem — it’s a “reading chair,” “yoga chair,” “gaming chair”… you get the idea. Right, likely story… but, hey, if they know, then they know! They may even own one themselves but just never bothered to tell you!

We have 6 “Love Loungers” in a spa in North York. After 9 years, they needed to be reupholstered — they can take a beating with constant daily use! Even after 9 years, the high-density foam underneath was still good. I have used “Richards Upholstery” for every Lounger I’ve built from day one — they use a rolled double stitch, so no moisture ever penetrates the seams. Other local places where you can test drive our Loungers to see how amazing they truly are Oasis Aqualounge and M4, where they have had both had our Loungers for many years.

Just one more Lounger fact I’d like to share — a true story. Last year, I was contacted by a client who’d been injured in a car accident which had affected the quality of her sex life. In consultation with her doctor and an insurance company, she was able to get them to pay 50% of the cost of a “Love Lounger” so she could have a better quality of life despite her injuries. I was blown away and ultimately just so very happy for her. It’s good to know that the benefits of this furniture go way beyond just being a comfortable well built chair. It will last for many years if looked after: make sure to treat the leather with a conditioning product monthly and watch out for those high heels!

Outdoor Lounger

We also make outdoor versions in either a cedar or pressure treated cladding. These can be stained or painted, and being an all wood construction can have “rings” or other tie down hardware attached for a spicy level of play.

That’s all for this month. Thanks for following along. I’m off to prepare for our 7th annual 3XF Festival for September 12th in “Canada’s Largest Outdoor Dungeon!” BBQ supper, Burlesque dancers, Fire performer, dessert buffet and more FFFun than should be allowed outdoors under the stars.
